US Force Commander in Iraq Slated For Replacement
US Defense Department sources confirmed on May 25, 2004, that US Army Lt.-Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of US forces in Iraq, was to be replaced in the post, probably by June 30, 2004, possibly by Lt.-Gen. George Casey, the current Army Vice-Chief of Staff. Lt.-Gen. Sanchez’ move was in line with command rotational plans which were known to coincide with the transfer of power in Iraq from the Coalition Provisional Authority to the Iraqi Governing Council. No new posting had yet been announced for Lt.-Gen. Sanchez.
